The story of the five temples of Panch Kedar begins with the war of Mahabharata. The legend of Panch Kedar is that the Pandavas wanted freedom from the sin of fratricide when they were victorious in the Mahabharata war. The Pandavas wanted to get the blessings of Lord Shiva and wanted to get rid of the sin of killing a brother. Lord Shankar was angry with the Pandavas. When the Pandavas reached Kashi, Shiva was not present there. After receiving news from Lord Narada, the Pandavas too followed him to Kedarnath.
It is believed that various parts of Lord Shiva's body in the form of a bull, where he came out again, were considered as Panch Kedar. These included his navel portion in Madhyamaheshwar, the shoulder portion at Tungnath, the head portion at Rudranath, and his hair at Kalpeshwar.
